Can Semi-Trucks Park Overnight at Rest Areas?

Semi-trucks parked overnight in designated spaces at a highway rest area

Updated September 2026

You enter a rest area expecting to finish your driving day, but the signs near the entrance mention time limits and nearly every truck space is occupied.

Can you stay there for the night?

In many states, commercial drivers may use designated rest-area spaces to take a required break. However, overnight parking rules, maximum stay times and unattended-vehicle restrictions vary by state and location.

Check the posted signs before beginning your break. A public rest area does not automatically provide unlimited overnight parking.

Why rest-area truck parking fills so quickly

Public parking represents a relatively small part of the national truck parking supply.

The Federal Highway Administration’s 2019 Jason’s Law inventory identified approximately 313,000 truck parking spaces nationwide:

  • About 40,000 at public rest areas.
  • About 273,000 at private truck stops.

Based on that historical inventory, public rest areas accounted for roughly 13% of the identified spaces.

The inventory has changed since 2019, so these figures should not be treated as current availability. They do help explain why relying on one public rest area can leave a driver without a place to stop.

What should you check before parking?

Before turning off the truck and starting your break, look for signs covering:

  • Maximum parking time.
  • Overnight restrictions.
  • Commercial vehicle spaces.
  • Areas reserved for cars, buses or emergency vehicles.
  • Seasonal closures.
  • Rules for unattended vehicles or trailers.
  • Idling restrictions.
  • Facility operating hours.

Rules can differ between rest areas in the same state. Follow the signs at the specific facility and check the state transportation department’s current information.

If the rules are unclear, contact the state DOT, highway patrol or rest-area operator before assuming the truck can remain overnight.

Rest area or commercial truck parking?

Both can provide a place to stop, but they serve different needs.

Rest areaCommercial truck parking
Located directly along the highwayMay require leaving the interstate
Availability is usually first come, first servedAvailability may be confirmed by phone
Parking limits depend on state and facility rulesStay length depends on the facility’s policies
Trailer-drop parking is generally limited or prohibitedSome facilities accommodate stand-alone trailers
Spaces may fill earlyAdditional daily or extended parking may be available
Services vary by locationAccess, monitoring and repair services may be available

If you need to leave a trailer, remain for more than one driving break or enter and exit several times, confirm that the location allows it. A normal rest-area space may not fit that use.

Do not wait until the final minutes on your clock

A rest area shown on a map may be closed, full or restricted when you arrive.

Before the last part of your driving period:

  1. Choose a preferred rest area or authorized parking facility.
  2. Save a second option along the same route.
  3. Check current closures through the state DOT or 511 system.
  4. Confirm whether the location accepts your vehicle combination.
  5. Leave enough driving time to reach the backup.

If the first rest area is full, do not park on an entrance ramp, exit ramp or travel lane simply because other trucks are there. Continue only when you can do so legally and safely, and notify dispatch before the situation becomes urgent.

When commercial parking may be the better option

Consider an authorized commercial facility when you need:

  • Confirmation before arriving.
  • Space for a stand-alone trailer.
  • Extended or monthly parking.
  • 24/7 entry and exit.
  • A location where both the truck and trailer can remain.
  • Camera monitoring.
  • Repair services near the parking space.

Call first and describe your equipment. A facility that can accommodate a bobtail may not have the appropriate space for a complete tractor-trailer combination.

Frequently asked questions

Is overnight truck parking allowed at every rest area?

No. Rules vary by state and facility. Some rest areas permit overnight breaks, while others impose time limits or additional restrictions. Follow posted signs.

Can I leave my trailer at a rest area?

Do not assume that trailer-drop parking is allowed. Rest areas generally provide temporary spaces for vehicles traveling on the highway. Check the specific facility’s rules before disconnecting or leaving a trailer unattended.

Can I complete a 10-hour break at a rest area?

It may be possible when parking is permitted for the entire period and the driver complies with current hours-of-service rules. Confirm the facility’s stay limit before starting the break.

What should I do if the rest area is full?

Check your backup parking location, notify dispatch and look for another authorized facility along the route. Avoid shoulders, ramps and properties that do not expressly permit commercial parking.

Can I reserve a rest-area truck space?

Most public rest-area spaces are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Some states use parking-information systems, but displayed availability may change before you arrive.

This article provides general planning information. Rest-area rules, parking limits, facility hours and availability vary by state and location and may change. Follow posted signs and current instructions from transportation and law-enforcement authorities.
